Natural sleeping aids, part 5

by Mike Zimmerman on September 16, 2011

Sleeping is supposed to be a time of rest and relaxing, enjoying the comfort of letting go of the day and slipping off into a dreamy world. It is therefore important to have the area which you sleep in to be as comfortable as possible.

• Sleeping comfort

Having the proper mattress is essential to getting good sleep and feeling refreshed when you get up. You may fall asleep on a board, but when you get up (or when you wake up in the middle of the night), your muscles and bones will all ache, and you will be dragging around a dilapidated body around the rest of the day.

Each type of mattress has its own lifetime. Mattresses with box springs tend to last only a few years, whereas memory foam mattresses have a lifetime of ten years or more. Whatever type of mattress you have, if you start to notice that it is starting sag where you sleep, you should definitely invest in a new one. Take time to shop for one well. A good mattress is an investment. Visit various furniture and mattress stores and talk to professionals who can answer all your questions. Be sure to test the mattresses out while you are in the store. Request to see various types if you are not certain on what kind you are looking for. Some people enjoy extra firm mattresses, particularly if they have back pain. Others enjoy a soft, cushiony mattress to sink into. Memory foams are growing in popularity as they are both cushy and supportive.

The right pillow is also important. And each person is different as to what he or she prefers. Some like theirs paper thin and lumpy, while others like theirs plump and downy. In either case, when you start to notice that the way your head rests on the pillow is starting to give you a crick in the neck, or requires you to turn it over and fluff it constantly, it is time to get a new one. Especially nice are the contour neck pillows which offer both support as well as cushioned comfort. They can take a few nights to get accustomed to, as they are different than the average pillow, but if you suffer from neck pain, it could be the perfect option for you.

Keep your bedroom at a temperature where you will not have to constantly be throwing on and off covers during the night. Slightly cooler rooms are easier to sleep in than warmer rooms. If you tend to get cold easily, keep an extra blanket on the bed just in case and wear some warmer pajamas. For cold winter nights, heated blankets are perfect warming the bed up before you crawl into it. They should have a temperature you can set it at, as well as an automatic on and off, to keep you perfectly warm and comfortable throughout the night.
